An officer of the Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) has donated blood to save the life of a motorist’s critically ill daughter after confirming the driver’s emergency, in a development the agency says reflects ongoing reforms aimed at promoting professionalism and compassion among its personnel.
The agency’s Public Relations Officer, Malam Abubakar Ibrahim Sharada, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Kano.
Sharada said the officer had stopped the motorist for violating traffic regulations, but the driver explained that he was rushing to obtain blood for his daughter, who required an urgent transfusion at a hospital.
According to him, rather than dismissing the explanation, the officer verified the claim by visiting the hospital and confirming that the child was in critical condition.
He said the officer subsequently volunteered to donate his blood, a gesture that contributed to saving the girl’s life.
Sharada said the act earned commendation from healthcare professionals attending to the child, including Dr Dalha Gwarzo of the Kano State Blood Transfusion Committee, Prof. Mahmud A. Abbas, Director-General of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC), Dr Usman Bashir, Director-General of the Kano State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA), and Dr Rahila Muktar, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KASCHMA).
He added that the child’s mother later visited the KAROTA headquarters to express appreciation to the agency for fostering discipline, professionalism and compassion among its personnel.
Sharada also said the agency recently intercepted a trailer conveying alcoholic beverages into Kano State, describing the operation as part of KAROTA’s commitment to enforcing traffic and other relevant state laws.
Reacting to the development, the Managing Director of KAROTA, Hon. Faisal Mahmud Kabir, described the officer’s action as a reflection of the values the agency is promoting through ongoing reforms.
Kabir said the agency would continue to strengthen the capacity of its personnel through regular orientation, training and character development programmes.
He stressed that effective traffic management should be guided not only by professionalism but also by empathy and respect for human life.
The managing director also thanked the Kano State Government for its continued support, saying the administration’s people-centred policies had contributed significantly to the agency’s achievements.
He reaffirmed KAROTA’s commitment to ensuring road safety while maintaining high standards of professionalism, integrity and compassion in the discharge of its responsibilities.
