Anti-Trafficking Day: Groups seek stronger global action

‎The Centre for Legal Orientation and Humanitarian Aid Initiative (CELOHA Nigeria) and West Africa Network for Protection of Children (WAN) has called for stronger global collaboration to tackle human trafficking.

‎This is contained in a statement issued by the Chief of Operations CELOHA and WAN Network Coordinator, Buhari Abubakar on Tuesday in Kano.

According to the statement, traffickers are on the increase, they use online scams, fake job offers, fraudulent recruitment and other digital platforms to lure victims.

“Children, youths, women and vulnerable persons remain primary targets of traffickers operating through social media, message applications and fake employment agencies.

‎“Many victims are deceived with promises of education, employment, scholarships and better economic opportunities before being subject to forced labour, sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, begging and other forms of abuse”.

‎Abubakar said advance in digital technology has enabled traffickers to conceal their identities and expand their operation through fake websites, online advertisements and fraudulent digital profiles.

‎He urged the government to strengthen enforcement of anti-trafficking laws, prosecute offenders, improve child protection systems and provide comprehensive support for survivors.

Abubakar also called for greater investment in digital literacy, online safety education, cross-border cooperation, public awareness campaign and partnership with technology companies to detect and remove trafficking-related online content.

‎The Chief added that CELOHA has  reaffirmed its commitment to promote child protection, safe migration, family reunification and regional cooperation to combat trafficking, safeguard rights and dignity of children and other vulnerable persons.
