The Kano State Government has revoke all land allocations made within the premises and officially demarcated boundaries of public schools, hospitals and other critical public institutions across the state.
The Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, Alhaji Abduljabbar Muhammad Umar Garko, announced the decision during an inspection of Government Girls College (WTC), Kano, following complaints of alleged land encroachment and repeated trespassing into the school’s female students’ hostel.
Garko said the decision was part of the government’s efforts to curb land grabbing, illegal development and fraudulent land transactions, as well as safeguard public assets.
He said the inspection was prompted by reports that some individuals had encroached on land belonging to the college.
The commissioner, accompanied by the Chairman of the Kano State Task Force Committee on Illegal Structures, Dr Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, and other senior government officials, inspected buildings and other structures allegedly erected within the school’s premises.
During the visit, Garko ordered the demolition of one of the structures, alleging that construction on the property continued despite an earlier directive by Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf suspending work on the site.
He warn that the government would not tolerate illegal occupation of land belonging to public institutions and vowed to recover all such properties across the state.
The commissioner also caution prospective land buyers to verify the status of any property with the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning before making any purchase to avoid falling victim to fraudulent transactions.
