Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State on Monday inaugurate Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) headquarters and a specialise sickle cell centre, reaffirm his administration’s commitment to strengthen healthcare delivery.
The Governor also flag off the distribution of 3,000 customise digital blood pressure monitors to senior public servants, maternal and neonatal health commodities, accident and emergency supplies, as well as 4,855 bedsheets for secondary healthcare facilities across the state.
Speaking during the ceremony in Kano, Yusuf describe the projects and interventions as major milestones in the state’s efforts to improve access to quality healthcare, particularly for vulnerable groups.
He said the newly inaugurate KNCDC headquarters at Infectious Diseases Hospital, will strengthen disease surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, contact tracing, case management, infection prevention and control, risk communication, and emergency response across the state.
The Governor said Abba Care Sickle Cell Centre, located at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, was the first specialised facility of its kind in Kano and Northern Nigeria, established to provide comprehensive and free care for people living with sickle cell disease.
According to him, “the centre will offer diagnosis, counselling, treatment, follow-up care, patient education, health promotion and specialised disease management, while also supporting research and innovation.
Yusuf said that sickle cell disease continued to affect thousands of families in the state, with many children experiencing recurrent painful crises and other life-threatening complications, underscoring the need for specialised care.
He said the distribution of digital blood pressure monitors was aimed at promoting regular health screening among civil servants and political appointees, describing hypertension as a silent killer linked to stroke, heart failure, kidney disease and sudden death.
The governor added that the distribution of maternal and neonatal health commodities, accident and emergency supplies, and bedsheets would improve service delivery, strengthen hygiene standards and contribute to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality in healthcare facilities across the 44 local government areas.
Yusuf said his administration’s commitment to sustain investment in preventive, primary and secondary healthcare, while commending Ministry of Health, healthcare workers, traditional institutions, development partners and other stakeholders for their support in improving healthcare services in the state.
