Kano boosts livestock health, productivity

The Kano State Government has organised a one-day training on Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), an animal disease, for veterinary workers ahead of a planned statewide vaccination exercise.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training is part of efforts to improve animal health and enhance livestock production in the state.

“PPR is a disease that mostly affects sheep and goats. It is characterised by high fever, severe pneumonia, and foul-smelling diarrhea, and can be prevented through vaccination,” he said.

The Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr Aliyu Isall, that the training brought together participants from the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology of the ministry.

Isa-Aliyu urged participants to pay maximum attention to the exercise in order to achieve the desired result.

He emphasised that the ministry was established by Gov. Abba Yusuf to transform livestock production from a traditional system into a modern and more productive sector.

The commissioner stressed the importance of accurate data collection and proper record-keeping during the vaccination exercise.

“All participants must ensure proper documentation of the number of animals vaccinated against PPR in their respective areas,” he said.

He noted that the training would be conducted in two sessions, adding that during the first session, participants would be trained on PPR and data management by Dr Mubashir Mustapha.

According to him, the second session will focus on data capturing using the ministry’s recently developed vaccination management software.

He said it was design to facilitate real-time collection and monitoring of vaccination data, noting that it would be facilitated by Malam Aminu, a data management specialist. (NAN)
