The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) has expressed concern over the use of Gadar Dangi bridge as a settlement and for open defecation.

‎The Managing Director of REMASAB, Dr. Muhammad Salisu-Khalil, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen by the board’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Abubakar Ahmad, on Monday in Kano.

‎“The concern follows an inspection by the board’s Monitoring Team to assess environmental sanitation, waste management and general cleanliness in the area.

“Our team observed that some men, women and children have turned the area beneath and around the bridge into an informal place of residence.

‎“Some sections of the bridge are being used for open defecation,” he said.

Salisu-Khalil said the development poses concerns for public health, environmental hygiene and safety, particularly because the location is a major public infrastructure.

‎He noted that the inspection was part of the board’s ongoing monitoring and supervisory activities across Kano State to ensure proper waste management and compliance with environmental sanitation standards.

The managing director called for coordinated intervention by relevant authorities to address the situation in a humane and orderly manner, while protecting public spaces and critical infrastructure.

Salisu-Khalil also urged residents and communities to maintain clean surroundings, use designated waste disposal points and avoid activities that could contribute to environmental degradation.

‎“REMASAB will continue regular monitoring and supervision across the state to identify and address emerging environmental sanitation challenges,” he said.
