The Federal Fire Service (FFS), Kano State Command, has urged residents to adopt safety measures at home and in their communities to prevent disasters and minimise their impact.
‎
‎
‎The Command made the call in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Al-Hassan Ahmad Kantin, on Tuesday to mark the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR).
‎
‎
‎The statement, based on a lecture note by DSF Abubakar Imrana Mansur of the Command, highlighted the importance of household preparedness in reducing risks and protecting lives and property.
‎
‎
‎It advised residents to avoid overloading electrical sockets, operate generators outside residential buildings, store cooking gas and fuel safely, keep emergency exits clear and develop family evacuation plans.
‎
‎
‎The Command also urged parents to educate their children on basic fire safety and ensure that elderly persons, children and persons with disabilities could evacuate safely during emergencies.
‎
‎
‎It stressed the need for markets, schools, places of worship, offices and other public facilities to have functional fire-safety equipment, accessible escape routes and effective emergency response plans.
‎
‎
‎
‎The statement called on emergency management agencies, traditional and religious leaders, community organisations and residents to collaborate in promoting disaster preparedness across Kano State.
‎
‎
‎It further advised residents to identify potential hazards in their surroundings, take preventive measures, heed credible emergency warnings and act responsibly to reduce disaster risks.
‎
‎
‎
‎The Command emphasised that disaster prevention required collective responsibility, adding that preparedness at the household level could contribute to safer and more resilient communities.
‎
‎
‎The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed annually on Oct. 13 to promote awareness and action towards reducing disaster risks and strengthening resilience.
